UP NEXT: WEEKEND OF THUNDER AT NEW JERSEY MOTORSPORTS PARK

On June 13 and 14, 2015, New Jersey Motorsports Park in Millville, New Jersey is hosting the Weekend of Thunder, featuring Round 5 of the Trans Am Championship. Sponsored by MPT Industries, the event brings together Trans Am racing with Formula Lites, sanctioned by SCCA Pro Racing; Porsche Club of America member races; and two race groups from the National Auto Sport Association’s Northeast Region.

The Trans Am teams load in on Thursday, June 11, to prepare for tech inspection and test sessions throughout the day on Friday. The track goes hot at 9:30 am on Saturday for practice sessions, with qualifying beginning after lunch and additional practice laps at 4 pm. The green flag drops at 11:50 am on Sunday, June 14 for the MPT Twelve Lubricant & Penetrant 100, a 45-lap race of the TA2 Class. The TA and TA3 Classes race at 3:10 pm in the MPT Fuel System Cleanse 100.

Robinson Racing will compete in Round 5 of the Trans Am Series’ TA2 Class with two Chevrolet Camaros, sponsored by 74 Ranch Resort. Renowned endurance racer and winner of the prestigious Rolex 24 at Daytona in 2013, Shane Lewis drives the No. 72 Camaro for Robinson Racing. Driving the No. 74 Camaro is Gar Robinson, son of former Trans Am driver George Robinson, who ran 46 races from 1988 to 1994 with one victory, eight top-five appearances and 24 top-ten showings. Gar Robinson has earned two podium finishes so far in the 2015 Trans Am season: second place at Sebring International Raceway and third place at Road Atlanta.

RACE RESULTS: ROUND 4 AT LIME ROCK PARK

Lime Rock Park in scenic Lakeville, Connecticut welcomed the Trans Am teams and spectators with blue skies and idyllic weather for the Memorial Day weekend. Robinson Racing competed in Round 4 of the Trans Am Championship, the 3-Dimensional Services Muscle Car Challenge for the TA2 Class.

On Friday, May 22, the track held qualifying and practice with a field of 23 Camaros, Mustangs and Challengers. Shane Lewis qualified eighth with his teammate Gar Robinson right behind him in ninth. The top 9 cars in the TA2 Class were all within one second of each other in qualifying.

With morning temperatures dipping into the 40s on Saturday, the festivities kicked off with a Fan Walk on the front straightaway. Thousands of fans encircled the cars lined up on the track, getting autographs from their favorite drivers and taking selfies with Muscle Cars. The 100.5-mile race began at 1 pm, with the field getting treacherously stacked up in the first corner after the Sam Posey Straight on every lap.

“We had a character building race this weekend,” noted Gar Robinson. “I started 9th and moved up to 7th. Like a rookie, I got impatient and tried to overdrive the car resulting in an 18th place finish.”

Attempting to pass on the outside of Turn 2 late in the race, Lewis lost positions. “I had to back way off, or I would have been mowing the grass or visiting a tire wall,” noted Lewis. “I was in 9th place after being shuffled back and almost put off track. Even worse, I was stuck behind more Mustangs!” Lewis continued to battle to the end and finished the 67-lap race in 7th place.

Last weekend’s event was also Leg 1 of the 3-Dimensional Services Triple Shot Showdown, a 3-event segment of the 2015 Trans Am Championship highlighting Lime Rock Park, Road America and the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course. Drivers who accumulate the most points in the three events will be awarded additional silverware in the mid-season showdown.

Round 4 of the Trans Am Series at Lime Rock Park will be broadcast on the CBS Sports Network at 12:00 pm ET on both Saturday, June 6 and Saturday, June 13, 2015. The Next Dimension 100 featuring the TA and TA3 Classes airs on June 6, and the 3-Dimensional Services Muscle Car Challenge featuring the TA2 Class airs on June 13.

In the 2015 Wilwood TA2 Rookie of the Year Standings, Gar Robinson, a San Antonio, Texas native, is in second place, 11 points behind the leader, while Shane Lewis, a resident of Jupiter, Florida, is in third place. Lewis and Robinson are tied for fourth place in the 2015 TA2 Points Standings with 76 points apiece, 9 points behind the third place driver and 11 points fewer than second place.
