On Saturday, March 14, 2015, Robinson Racing competed in the 2015 Polaris RZR General Tire Mint 400 with drivers Shane Lewis and Gar Robinson. Held in Las Vegas, Nevada, the Mint 400 is the largest off-road race in North America, with a field of 330 teams entered in the competition. Debuting in 1967, the Mint 400 has the distinction of being the oldest and most prestigious off-road race in America, and it is now part of The Best in Desert Championship race series. The event attracts more than 40,000 off-road fans and racers to “Sin City”.
In the Mint 400, Shane Lewis and Gar Robinson raced custom vehicle #5574, sponsored by 74 Ranch Resort, in the Class 5500 Baja Challenge. The team drew the first spot in the starting positions. The 400-mile course was laid out as 2 laps, with 200 miles per lap. Gar Robinson led the charge in the first lap, and then pitted for fuel and the driver swap. Shane Lewis raced the second lap.
Experiencing challenges with flat tires at the end of the first lap due to collisions with rocks, the vehicle then got damage to a rear hub when a wheel came off during the second lap, with Lewis in the driver’s seat. Gar Robinson noted, “You must beat the desert before you beat anyone else.”
The team had started the race off enthusiastically, having drawn the first starting position with Gar set to drive the first lap. “Lots of learning curves, lots of challenges, but it was all worth it at the end,” noted Gar. “Thanks to the guys at Zero One Motorsports that put so much work into the cars, and our navigators that we took to hell and back.” The team ended the race fifth in class.
