Founded in 2011, Pura Vida Spirits has created a fine line of elixirs all carefully hand crafted and imported from Mexico: four award-winning, super-premium tequila expressions crafted from 100% blue weber agave in the highlands of Jalisco; NARANJA, an authentic Mexican orange liqueur which was used to make the first margarita in 1941 at Hussong’s Cantina in Ensenada, Mexico; Sangrita and Bloody Mary Maria mixes which are handmade using El Guapo’s secret family recipes. Billy F. Gibbons is the bearded lead guitarist for blues/rock band ZZ Top. Billy F. Gibbons formed ZZ Top in 1970, with the first album following in 1971. Their breakthrough came after the members parted ways around 1976, and reemerged with a newfound energy on 1983’s Eliminator, which spawned several hits. Billy Gibbons and ZZ Top continue to make music, and Gibbons has branched out into television, tequila and culinary endeavors. He is one of the early investors in Pura Vida Tequila.
Billy Gibbons was born December 16, 1949, in Houston, Texas. Right after his 14th birthday, for Christmas in 1963, Gibbons got his first guitar, an electric guitar. Soon after, he formed his first band, called the Saints, with his second band, the Coachmen, following a couple of years later.
The Coachmen’s sound was inspired by the Rolling Stones and other blues-infused bands of the time, but they began to get interested in the psychedelic movement of the time, soon changing their name to the Moving Sidewalks. With the name change came a hard turn into the psychedelic sounds of the time, featuring experimental songs and varying effects. The new band caught the attention of Jimi Hendrix, and Moving Sidewalks began touring with the legendary guitarist in 1968 on the “Are You Experienced” tour.
As the 1960s came to a close, so did the Moving Sidewalks. In 1969, Gibbons sought to form a more blues/rock-based band, and it was ZZ Top. The band soon cut its first single, “Salt Lick,” and started playing live gigs, with Gibbons the band leader and lead vocalist.
In 1971, ZZ Top released their first album, appropriately (and humorously) called ZZ Top’s First Album. The success of the album is likely attributable to the success of the band’s live shows leading into it, because their second album, Rio Grande Mud (1972), didn’t catch on, and neither did the tour that followed.
Tres Hombres, the band’s 1973 album, was full of bluesy rock songs that stuck with the listening audience, and it put the band on the map. The album made the top 10 on the album chart and also contained ZZ Top’s first top 10 single, “La Grange.” The success of the tour led the band to start recording songs for a live album, and Fandango! was released in 1975. Fandango! made the top 10 as an album, and the song “Tush” reached number 20 on the Billboard singles chart. For more information, visit www.ZZTop.com and www.BillyGibbons.com.
Born Salvatore Paul Erna, Sully Erna is best known as the singer for the multi-platinum-selling post-grunge band Godsmack.
Hailing from Lawrence, MA, Erna developed an interest in music at an early age thanks to his father, also named Salvatore Erna, who played trumpet. Erna initially started as a drummer at just three years old and by 11 had already begun to shun sheet music, opting instead to play by ear.
His first big break came in 1993 when he signed his first record deal with his band Strip Mind. The band broke up soon afterwards, but just a few years later Erna would catch another big break.
Wanting to make the switch from drums to vocals, Erna formed Godsmack in 1995. Just three years later the band released its self-titled debut, which went quadruple platinum and rocketed Erna and Godsmack to rock stardom.
Being a rock star isn’t the only thing on Erna’s plate, however. Aside from being a multi-instrumentalist, Erna is also an accomplished poker player, competing in the 2006 and 2007 World Series of Poker, managing to be the last of the celebrity contestants in both appearances and placing 237th out of a field of over 6,000 players in the 2007 WSOP.
The singer also released his memoir, The Paths We Choose, in 2007. The book chronicles the frontman’s life right up until Godsmack earned their record deal. Despite heavy touring and recording with his day job, Erna also found the time to write and record a solo album, and in 2010 released Avalon on Universal Republic. He is also a fan of and early investor in Pura Vida Tequila. For more information, visit www.Godsmack.com and www.SullyErna.com.
